Looks like the sun is going through a rather active period lately. It’s possible we will be able to view an Aurora(Northern Lights) Tuesday morning or night. Currently the arrival or start time is estimated to be 8am our time, hopefully it will hold off until the evening. If you head outside, try to find a dark area so your eyes adjust to the dark, then just look to the northern sky, more towards the horizon.
Keep in mind I am looking for multiple backup chasing partners for this years storm season. My son Aaron is in college and working a part time job, there will be days I will be in need of a body in my car. This will either involve driving my car or operating the laptop, navigating, along with the streaming camera, camcorder(s) and still camera. Sounds simple? If interested send me an email, the link is at the bottom of our homepage. I am hoping to have several people committed and trained so that I don’t have to chase alone this year…..

Well here we are, 2012 has arrived, 2011 although exciting weather wise was also very devastating, prayers go out to those lost to severe weather in 2011.
Here is our 2011 summary of weather conditions from our weather station in O’Fallon, MO. I know you all have been up all night waiting for this! ;)
Temperatures: 44 days of 90° or higher, 9 more than 2010, 23 days with a high below 32°, 13 less than 2010, we had 87 days with a low of 32° or colder, 12 less than 2010, and 1 day with a low of 0° or below, 1 less than 2010. High recorded was 103.1° and the low was -1.2.
We recorded 40.56 inches of rain, with measurable rain on 105 days, 70 days recorded totals over .10 inch, and 9 days over 1 inch of rain.
The wind average was 3.8 mph with a high gust recorded @ 48 mph.
2011 brought several storm chases for us including our youngest son’s first chase. This happened on the Good Friday/St. Louis tornado storm. We observed this storm from Ashland, MO to Weldon Springs and gave up due to light and I don’t like to chase in heavily populated areas. We also chased in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois this past year. I went on several chases by myself, limiting my ability to get a reasonable amount of photos/video, Aaron’s schedule has picked up with work, school and his band Eventide Landlocked taking up his free time. This brought on some unique challenges for me, there is a lot to do when chasing, it is a two person job. Look for an announcement later this month; I am in need of a primary/backup chase partner(s).
Happy 2012 everyone!

Although this has been up for some time now, O’Fallon Weather in partnership with Foristell, MO Weather have a live audio feed of the St. Louis National Weather Service NOAA Radio. This link is available on the homepage of both websites.
Our 3rd webcam in now fully operational, after careful consideration my son and I decided on a view looking due north. Over the years we have watched many storms worthy of recording come from this general direction. This should also provide us with another view of nightime lightning shows for our live streaming during severe weather events.
It is December, start of Meteorological Winter, so it should come as not surprise that we start to see mention of frozen precipitation. Over the next several days we will see rain then we are seeing some indication of a possible snowfall in the area on Monday. Rain or snow, next week may bring our first lows in the teens since last Winter.

So it’s been way to long, the weather has been quiet, but we have had a lot going on behind the scenes here at ofallonweather.org
We have changed webhost again, it is very important to me that my visitors get to the site when they want, not when my webhost decides to fix issues. We were down for over 20 hours during the month of September, so I pulled the plug, the site is now hosted out of Chicago.
We also have celebrated the 1 year anniversary of our webcams. I have tried to put together a year long time lapse with no results….Yet, give me some time. We will be adding a 3rd camera soon, I have had it testing for some time now, I just can’t decide where and what direction is best.
I have also wiped and reloaded the computer here at our home that keeps the site updated, this system runs over 10 programs all the time, when we stream live video that jumps to over 15 programs. It is a quad core cpu with 2 gigs of ram, processor usage averages 25%. We were experiencing some instability due to some freeware I tested on the system in the last several months.
Thanks for stopping by, look for more updates as the weather picks up for winter!

Well after some last minute location changes, our latest weather station is up and running! It is located at Polestar Boating Center, on the banks of the Mississippi River. For those familiar with the area it is at the bottom of the Dardenne Slough, just upstream from the Illinois/Mississippi River confluence. I will be adding more to the site in time. No webcam at this time, but I do have a link on the homepage to another site with 2 webcams on the river nearby. River Weather Home Page

Friday and Saturday will be busy for me. I will be at Tri City Speedway Friday night, the website has sponsored 5 laps of the 100 lap Super Late Model Feature.
Saturday I offered our live video stream for the Blessing of the Fleet, this will be by the Shrine @ Portage des Sioux, MO. I am aiming at getting the video stream going around 1 pm. The parade of boats should be visible around 2 and the ceremonies should start around 2:15 as the boats pass the Our Lady of the River Shrine. Just announced yesterday: the Alton Water Ski Club will be putting on a 1 hour show immediately following the Blessing. I am planning on streaming this also, I am still waiting to hear back from the club, I just want to make sure they are alright with the video stream.
Till next time, stay cool!

I thought I would throw a quick update in today. Although I feel like I didn’t get much chasing in this year, looking back there is more than I think. I spent several days out by myself, which can take away from the experience having to handle all the jobs while trying to drive. We will continue to follow severe weather, but prime tornado season for this year is over, they will still occur, but typically the frequency drops off until early Fall.
I am already busy preparing for next year. I have purchased a new Chevy Cruze Echo, this will cut my gas expense by more than half, I am saving ~$65 a month in fuel for work travel alone. I am working with Ram Mounts to get a laptop mount designed and built for this car, they currently have no solution and are real close to sending me a prototype. I have also been working on getting our mobile streaming video quality up. I believe we have our solution in place, it looks promising while testing at home. Our software was going crazy with the frame rate of the video, we changed our connection from firewire to a USB video capture device. The software can now control the frame rate to whatever I set it to. I am also looking at ways to insure we have the best internet connection possible wherever we are, I think I have a solution and likely will implement it before next chase season.
Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July, stay cool!

We have changed our live stream provider, we did this to get some more exposure. Imap is being used by local TV stations which should bring a big increase in local traffic. For those that have not checked it out, we typically stream severe weather, this happens when we are out chasing or we stream one of our two weather cams from our home during severe weather events.
Aaron and I went out on a 2 day chase marathon earlier this week. We had our first total bust the first day, all we saw was blue skies and bugs in Minnesota. The second day we positioned ourselves near Iowa City, we were able to get near some severe storms and stream some video, we did the best we could with the time and weather we were given.
Hate to push Facebook, but that is the best way to get quick updates on what we are doing, we can be found here: Ofallon Weather Facebook Page
